(GreatSaiyaman777) While going through the Ginga Giri Giri archives (http://www.lucastadium.com/index2.html) I came across a feature by Castor Troy detaling his meetings with FUNimation people at the Anime Expo 2000 Convention. Earlier it said, "To help out the DBZ community after our closing, we have decided that you can take whatever content you like to make sure you preserve our hard work. Head to the archives and grab whatever you can..." Sweet! I really liked this piece so I decided to put it up here at dbzoa.net. Thanks go to webmaster Castor Troy for writing it and offering it to crazy webarchive explorers like myself. Now, let's begin...

"I never thought the day would come when I would meet FUNimation face to face. To tell the truth, I very excited about the whole ordeal about going to anime-expo and meeting them. It actually turned out better than I planned....

I came up to Chris Sabat and asked him if he got a call from VegettoEX and he said that EX should call him soon. Upon looking upon my name tag, which I put my real name and "Castor Troy" on, he recognized me from my site right away and said that it was one of his favorites, although I do bash FUNimation alot :) Sabat told me it was ok because I'm entitled to my own opinion. I also purchased the Android tapes while I was there and I told Sabat that I hope that he did a good job on Vegeta's Big Bang Attack and he assured me that he did and that I would enjoy the Android tapes, I'll get to those later....

I did ask him a few questions about the DVD's and they will be coming out later this month, so make sure you check out your stores for that. I also took a picture with Sabat and the Guy who plays Trunks's voice as Gen Fukunaga operated my camera and accidentely activated the zoom instead of the snap, lol. When the flash went off, Sabat told me he was gonna get a seizure from it :P I also talked to Gen Fukunaga about keeping in Spirit vs Spirit in the Cell game, but he told me that he was having trouble negotiating with TOEI for the rights and all he said was that it would be included on the DVDs but chances of Cartoon Network seeing Gohan going Super Saiya-jin 2 with the Spirit vs. Spirit music playing was very slim. So I told Gen that I only hope for the best. Then it took me another 3 hours to find Daizenshuu EX member Jon Allen and we went over to Sabat and co. right away. If all goes well, Jon may be able to get a job with FUNimation productions as a voice actor! You all know Jon has a great voice and it would be a big plus to hire him :) I can't really talk much about what went on but all I can say is that Sabat, Gen, and the Trunks VA turned out to be pretty nice guys, but I'll leave it up to VegettoEX and many others to provide you with the latest news.

The Android tapes

Well...... Sabat told me personally that I would enjoy these tapes and that the dialouge has improved...... and was he right?

Again I say... Yes and no...

Here is the BIGGEST PLUS of the android tapes..

THE DIALOGUE IS ACTUALLY GETTING CLOSER TO THE ORIGINAL

Although there were very little dialouge misinterpretations, there was BARELY any non-sensical humor and the dialouge was extremely good. I was so happy that the dialouge has gotten this better! Good job FUNi!

Now...the bad news..

#19's voice.....

It sounds NOTHING like the japanese original and it doesn't even sound decent in the least!!!! To me, it sounds like a automated bank teller trying to talk to you which makes me take him less seriously. I was able to deal with King Cold's voice, but I can't deal with #19's voice, it's awful and I can't even make out what he's saying. The japanese #19 sounded at least like an evil chinese porcelain doll, but the US dubbed one sounds like Casper the friendly ghost (Comment by Daimao) or Slippy from Starfox 64 (Comment by Skitz) over the radio.

Then the music..... they play that awful Garlic jr clown music at least 3 times on these episodes! Plus the music when Goku fights #19 sounds awful as well. I just had to pop in Disc 4 of the 5 CD set to relieve the stress. So the music went down big time....

Now...the 2 moments I have been dreading....Vegeta's first SSJ Transformation and the Big Bang attack....

Sabat told me that I would enjoy them but I'm sorry to say I wasn't impressed at all and was very disappointed :(

First of all, the music was too loud and monotonous during the SSJ transformation and Sabat just seemed to grunt it too hard. The entire presentation was completely ruined. The Big Bang attack was changed to "Here it comes! a little going away present for you! AHAHAHAHAHA!!!" I did not hear the words "Big Bang Attack" in there at all and there were too many unecessary lines added when Vegeta shouldn't have been talking at all.... Sabat... you told me that it would be good!
;_;

So in terms of Dialouge, the Android tapes have gotten better. In terms of music, they have gotten worse. Good work for the dialouge FUNi, but PLEASE try to improve the music! Get rid of the clown music! Get rid of the casio keyboard! Try to at least compose some decent tunes if you can't use the japanese music for the dub!

The Android tapes are enjoyable, just as long as you pretend the music isn't there :)"

Heh, maybe I should try going to a convention sometimes myself? I can't help but wonder how FUNimation would react if they saw a dude with a "GreatSaiyaman777" nametag come up to them at a convention... Now, let's look at some of the main highlights shall we?

"I also talked to Gen Fukunaga about keeping in Spirit vs Spirit in the Cell game, but he told me that he was having trouble negotiating with TOEI for the rights and all he said was that it would be included on the DVDs but chances of Cartoon Network seeing Gohan going Super Saiya-jin 2 with the Spirit vs. Spirit music playing was very slim."

Ah, the typical FUNI-bull shit. I distinctly remember Gen telling VegettoEX THE EXACT SAME THING at another convention about the song "Scouter vs. Scouter" from the Bardock Special. Funny how those people down in Mexico got ALL of the music rights to ALL of the 20+ movies and 500+ episodes, yet Gen even with an uncle who's an executive at Toei just wasn't able to break the "negotiations," huh? You see, this is why you can NEVER trust anything FUNimation says without first taking a huge gulp of salt first. They're not interested in presenting an honest front to fans- they're simply interested in telling the fans what they want the fans to hear. (And what they also think, to an extent, the fans would "want" to hear from them) As Ramza once said, they've been caught in lies so many times that it's not even funny...

Oh, and on a sidenote FUNimation hasn't tried pulling that same shitty excuse for replacing GT's music. Between the Blue Water dub in England using GT's original score (not to mention the fact that Ken Morrision also acted very CHEAPLY by pulling a "Season 3" on Ocean fans by hiring a new, cheaper, inexperienced group of actors) and the "Genterview" becoming infamous in the anime community, that excuse is now long-dead in terms of usefullness for spreading propaganda. Nowadays it's just, "pumping up the dynamics, action, we think the original music is horrible and way too instrumental, etc." Well.... they are being more honest now, at least.

"So I told Gen that I only hope for the best. Then it took me another 3 hours to find Daizenshuu EX member Jon Allen and we went over to Sabat and co. right away. Time for some more side notes. You can view Jon Allen's view of the Anime Expo over at DaizenshuuEX (http://web.archive.org/web/20010802115923/vegex.pokeball.net/thoughts/thought_18.shtml) which I recommend as it's pretty interesting too. Also, Jon eventually did become a voice actor for FUNimation, as also detailed at the same site. (http://web.archive.org/web/20010801145611/vegex.pokeball.net/feature/index.shtml) Ah, the joys of the web archives... As for Jon Allen, you may remember him from Azrael-sama's earlier interview with him. He's a fairly famous webmaster in the DBZ Community who's worked for DaizenshuuEX, Planet Namek, dbzgtlegacy.com, written from DBZ Beckett and now works with Castor Troy at spiritdetective.com. (he also used to help out with "Ginga Giri Gigi") Also, he's best known for his "big 3" interviews he secured with FUNimation people, including Sean Schemmel, Sonny Strait and Bruce Faulconer. Aye, tis a lengthy resume indeed. :)

"Sabat told me that I would enjoy them but I'm sorry to say I wasn't impressed at all and was very disappointed :(

Heh. Typical "telling the fans what they want to hear" bs. Actually, it's possible that Chris Sabat simply DIDN'T KNOW what the hell Castor was talking about and decided to just play along. After all, NOBODY at FUNimation including Sabat actually bothered to watch the Japanese version of Season 4 prior to their (mis)dubbing it. Not a very professional way to handle things....

Speaking of the "Big Bang Attack," there's no way it could have been mistranslated by our friendly "Toei Engrish writer" as Vegeta ALWAYS says his attacks in English. (which is what Japanese punks like to do because, for whatever reason, they think it sounds cool. Toriyama commented that this is why he gave Vegeta this certain style of saying attacks) It was all the fault of whoever the English "scripter adaptors" for that episode were.

As of this butchering of the attack, it is never mentioned anywhere in the dub ever again. (usually it's just replaced with lines of Vegeta talking or "ARGH's!") Luckily however, during the dubbing of DBZ Budokai four Toei Executives decided to come down and watch it, as a DBZ game had never been dubbed before and this was a special occasion. When Sabat came to say his line, perhaps this is what happened...

Chris Sabat- "(Okay, 19, get ready cause I'm going to have to give you ANOTHER little going away present!)"
Toei Executive 1- "Ah, the BIG BANG ATTACK scene with Vegeta!"
Toei Executive 2- "Oh, that's my FAVORITE ATTACK in the WHOLE SERIES!
Toei Executive 3- "An impressive maneuver. Such power it contains."
Toei Executive 4- "I can't WAIT to see how the English version handles this famous scene! By all means, American Voice Actor-san, please impress us with your Big Bang Attack! I highly anticipate getting to watch you perform this scene."
Chris Sabat- "Here's a little going away...- Um... here's a little big bang going aw- erm... HEY GUYS, I NEED YOU TO LOOK OVER THIS SCRIPT AGAIN!"

Heh... kinda makes me sorry those Toei exec's didn't stay there permanetly, as their presence has been the ONLY thing ever to get Funimation to really show DBZ the proper respect that it deserves. Well, that's it people. Any of you guys have any stories about meeting or talking to FUNi people? E-MAIL em to me! Don't have any? Well, why not check out the anime news and, if a convention with FUNi people is coming, go there, check it out, talk to the people then e-mail me back? Or better yet, contact me before speaking to them and I can maybe have you ask them some questions on behalf. Bonus points will go to any fan who can meet up and speak with Josh Martin, the VA of dubbed Majin Buu's voice.
